Last week we spent a couple of memorable days in the heart of Northern Italy, between Piemonte and Veneto.
Our first stop was the historical vineyard of Santuvario in Boca. Paola and Costantino (the vines' guardians) guided us around the centenary vines of Croatina and other local varieties, set on an incredible soil composed of volcanic porphyry, basalt, and sands. We then moved indoors to taste a vertical of different vintages with Paola and Ivano. A day of immeasurable joy and learning.
From there, we found ourselves on the marly hills of Basso Monferrato with Deirdre and Maurizio of Cascina Val Liberata. A beautiful morning walking their vines taught us the profound depth of their biodynamic approach. A true highlight was tasting their first Slarina, made in 2017 in a glass demijohn, and the upcoming la Musa 2023 - the most fragrant Nebbiolo we've tasted so far.
We ended our trip with a day alongside Davide Andreatta "Il Ceo" around Breganze. A tour of different vineyards on the volcanic hills nestled under the Vicentine Alps in Veneto. The biodiversity surrounding these plots, and the unique soil composed of clay, tuff rocks, and basalt, translate into wines with a distinctive sense of place. We can't wait for the latest vintage to hit our shores.
